I can't believe summer is almost over. Even though we still continue some school activities throughout the summer, it's definitely not at the pace we keep during the school year. I know many families are preparing to send their kids back to school, and even though we home school, I still like to do what I can to support the local schools. One of our family's favorite things to collect are Box Tops for Education. It's such a simple way to give back to the community!

While I'm thinking about school starting back, there are two character qualities I'd like to focus on this year with my kids: strong and kind.
Encouraging Strength
When you think of someone or something that is strong, often we think of bulging muscles. However, there are other ways to be strong. When I think of the strength in Hefty trash bags, I'm hoping that they will be resilient and sturdy! These are the same character qualities I want to see in my children.
There are so many things in this world that can compromise the strength of our children:
- bullies
- disappointment
- failure
- insecurity
When children have inner strength, their world won't be rocked when trials come. Strength is vital to success in life.
Fostering Kindness
Kindness is another trait that doesn't come naturally. It has to be cultivated. On of my favorite childhood memories was coming home from school to a tray of freshly baked cookies. My mom was a constant example of kindness for me. Thankfully, her kindness wasn't dependent upon my behavior. She loved everyone around her at all times.
This is what I want to foster in my daughters. Kindness opens doors in relationships. It builds up others in a servant-hearted way.
Serving Our Community

I love the Box Tops program and can remember it from way back when I was a kid. I still save them, although now my collection goes to the kids that live next door. Anything we can do to help our schools raise money for some of the extras .. it’s a win! x
This post brought back a flood of memories! I remember saving Boxtops for Education as an elementary school student and then saving them for my nieces and nephews later on before I moved to Denmark. I’m happy to see that this program is still going strong!

Oh! I honestly haven’t been collecting mine but should. My son’s school has a big roundup of this at the beginning of the school year. Thanks for the reminder! But I can also spread the word to other moms I know so we can all try to win together! Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for writing this up, Betsy, and I’m really glad that you incorporated the box tops like you did. I live in a very rural area, and thanks to box tops, our schools were outfitted with some really great equipment in the computer labs.
I remember saving the box tops for my daughter’s schoo. Schools can get all sorts of amazing things with the box tops. I love how you try teach your kids kindness as a means to connecting with others in life. It’s so important to show kindness to others. And you do build relationships that way.
I have no kids yet but this initiative is so nice. I myself is involve in some community outreach program. In the future I would love to let my kids know about it and be aware and learn to join this kind of program. I hope also many companies will be able to include such projects to be involve in social activities.
I think this is a fabulous idea! Being able to help others at the school your child attends anonymously makes a difference for those who could not afford to get what they need. I wish we had something like this in my neck of the woods.
Box tops have always been something that we have done. It is such an easy way to give back to the school from products you already buy.
Wow these school box tops have been around since I was a child. I remember when I was younger begging my mom to cut these when I saw them on all of my products. Glad they are still around and helping schools!
I LOVE that there are so many easy ways to help, especially if you’re already buying cereal and stuff. Not hard to save a little piece of paper and turn it in. Here we’re collecting pop caps.
