Top 5 Savory Snacks

Snacks are usually the difference for me between eating well and failing miserably when I attempt to make better choices with my food.  If I have some good snacks planed out, I make it between meals without caving in to my less-than-healthy lazy foods.  So here's my list of the top five savory snacks:

1.  Celery with Pimento Cheese

So I'm not a huge celery fan...the stringy bites are not fun in my opinion.  I've found that if I cut them into thinner sticks, the strings are not as much of an issue.  Pair celery with pimento cheese, and you have a filling, savory snack that makes a great fuel source to carry you to your next meal.

2. Veggies and Hummus

#2 Savory Snack veggies and hummus

Hummus is a savory dip that is low fat and low in carbs.  Enjoy this savory treat with some fresh veggies and you can satisfy the crunchy craving without the calories.  Mix in a little Greek yogurt with the hummus and increase the protein power of your snack.  With a variety of different veggies, you could vary your snack throughout the week and never get bored of the same old thing!

3.  Avocado Tomato Feta Salad

#3 Savory Snack Avocad Tomato and feta salad

I have a sweet friend that knows I will take pictures of her kids for food!  She is an amazing cook and always brings me new things to try.  I first had this salad at her house.  With only a few ingredients, this salad is quick and easy to whip up.  Chop up some avocado and tomatoes.  Crumble a bit of feta on top, then drizzle extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice over the top.  Sprinkle a little salt, and you have a fresh and savory snack that not only tastes good, but looks beautiful as well!

4.  Laughing Cow Cheese on a Wasa Cracker

#4 Savory Snack cheese and crackers

If you've never heard of Wasa crackers, you're not the only one!  I never knew these lovely, crunchy, tasty crackers existed until I started looking for low-carb options.  When you're low-carbing it, generally you have to avoid all things grain, and you end up really missing the crunch of a chip or cracker.  These little guys contain a mere 60 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 9 net carbs.  Top it with a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese, and you've got a quick and easy, satisfying snack.  I topped mine with bacon for fun, but it's not necessary.

5.  Almonds

#5 Almonds

I never gave these nuts much of a second thought before I started changing how I think about food.  Just 5 or 6 of these little guys can keep my blood sugar at bay and my stomach not seeking out other sources of entertainment.  My husband likes the smoke-house flavored ones, but I prefer them simply roasted.  When I leave the house, I try to have a baggie of these in my purse so I'm prepared for unexpected snacking.

Oh it’s so good with the fresh lemon juice! But I’m truly a sucker for avocado, so that makes it a happy snack for me.

Yes I am. I started last October and I have been amazed at how it doesn’t feel like a diet, but a lifestyle change. I love all the food I eat and it makes me feel so much better than the junk I lived off of before!
