Connecting to Jesus through Writing: How Words Become Worship

Have you ever felt that tug to write—not for performance or productivity, but for presence?

Writing has always been one of the ways I slow down and notice what God is doing. It’s how I pray, remember, and sometimes even heal.

That’s why our family created a new Rooted Minds course series called Connecting with Jesus Through Writing—a four-part journey that helps you and your students discover how the creative process can draw you closer to the heart of God.

Whether you write poems, stories, or personal reflections, this series will help you see your words not as assignments, but as invitations to intimacy with Jesus.

🌿 The Vision: Writing as a Pathway to Presence

We often think of writing as something we do for God—a devotional, a reflection, or maybe a paper for school.

But what if writing could become a way to be with God?

Each part of this course invites you to engage your creativity as a spiritual practice—slowing down, listening, and noticing His presence in your imagination, your memories, and even your ordinary days.

This isn’t about producing polished pieces. It’s about partnership with the Creator, and rediscovering how He still writes beauty through your life.

✍️ Part 1: Writing with Jesus

Learning to Write from the Presence of God

connecting with Jesus through writing creatively

Every writer begins with a whisper—a desire to express, to understand, to connect.

In Writing with Jesus, we explore how that impulse to create is a sacred echo of the One who spoke the world into being. Writing becomes not just communication, but communion—a way to pay attention, to pray, and to discover what the Spirit is revealing.

This four-lesson course lays the foundation for all the others, inviting you to see your words as a partnership with God. We’ll learn from biblical examples of creative writing in Psalms, Proverbs, and Parables, discovering how Jesus—the Word made flesh—cares deeply about words and uses them to shape the world.

You’ll reflect on transformation as the heartbeat of every good story, practice noticing God’s presence in ordinary moments, and learn to invite the Holy Spirit into your creative process.

Through this course, writing shifts from striving to abiding. It becomes a conversation—an open page where you and Jesus meet.

🪶 Part 2: Connecting with Jesus Through Poetry

Learning the Language of Worship

connecting with Jesus through writing poetry

Poetry opens our hearts to awe. In this session, we explore rhythm, metaphor, and emotion as ways of responding to God’s beauty.

  • Breaking free from misconceptions — discovering that poetry looks different for everyone
  • Finding God in creation — using metaphor and simile to describe what’s unseen
  • Playing with sound and emotion — noticing how rhythm and tone can become prayer
  • Writing as worship — crafting small poems of gratitude, lament, and praise

Poetry becomes a way to notice — to pause long enough to see that God is already here.

I’ve written more about this idea of learning empathy and wonder through story in

It’s one of my favorite ways to see how imagination and love intertwine.

📖 Part 3: Connecting with Jesus Through Fiction

Learning from the Master Storyteller

Fiction lets us explore truth through imagination.

In this session, we study the parables—especially The Prodigal Son—as a model for storytelling that mirrors transformation and grace.

  • How stories work — understanding beginnings, middles, and endings through biblical storytelling
  • The journey Home → Away → Home — exploring the spiritual rhythm of leaving, learning, and returning
  • Character transformation — writing stories that reflect redemption
  • Inviting empathy — using story to help others see the Father’s heart

As we write fiction with Jesus, we learn to tell stories that don’t just entertain—they restore.

🌸 Part 4: Connecting with Jesus Through Creative Non-Fiction

Remembering the Stories God Is Still Writing

This final session is all about remembering with God—seeing His fingerprints in your memories and your everyday moments.

  • Memory writing — discovering God’s presence in peaceful or joyful memories
  • Personification — giving voice to creation as a witness to His faithfulness
  • Personal testimony writing — finding meaning in ordinary encounters with grace
  • Writing the mundane — learning to delight in small, sacred moments
  • Playing with form — using creative structures (like recipes, lists, or field guides) to tell true stories beautifully

Creative non-fiction reminds us that every ordinary day contains extraordinary evidence of His love.

✨ A Final Thought

When we write with Jesus, we begin to see our lives differently.

We notice beauty where we once saw routine.

We remember grace where we once felt loss.

And we start to realize that the story God is writing in us is far from over.

“He is still writing—and your life is one of His most beautiful sentences.”
