Spartanburg Methodist College – A Homeschool Friendly College

It's my oldest's junior year in high school this year, and we've been actively pursuing college options for his future. At first I was afraid that my homemade home school transcript wouldn't hold much weight with college applications. However, I've been finding that colleges are noticing homeschooled students, and they like what they see. Spartanburg Methodist College is a great option for homeschoolers that you should definitely check out.

Spartanburg Methodist College is a private, two-year college located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Their 110-acre residential campus is just minutes from the mountains, just over an hour away from Charlotte, North Carolina; and within a three-hour drive of Charleston, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia.

For students who are looking for a college experience while getting their feet wet in college courses, SMC looks like an excellent option. Focusing exclusively on freshmen and sophomore students, Spartanburg Methodist College provides the first two years of general college education courses in preparation to transfer to colleges and universities for the final two years of a bachelor’s degree.College Homeschoolers

If your student is considering college, here’s why SMC could be the right place to start:

  • Small, supportive campus environment. Home school students thrive in our small classes and enjoy personal attention from professors who are invested in helping them succeed. This is a great opportunity to ease into a classroom setting, and much less overwhelming than a big college campus.
  • Professors serve as student academic advisors. Your child will work directly with a professor to plan their courses and ensure they are on track to meet their goals. They won’t be left on their own to sink or swim. When I first met my husband in college, he was all over the place with his schedule. He was taking two courses that counted for the same requirement...he only needed one. What was his advisor doing?! Working with professors sounds amazing!
  • Transfer assistance to colleges and universities. 1/3 of all college students transfer to another institution before graduating. Because almost all SMC students transfer after two years, their faculty and staff are focused on assisting your student with transferring to the right college to complete their degree.
  • A Christian-centered education. SMC is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, but we welcome students from all religious and non-religious backgrounds. Chapel services are held weekly (but are not required) and there are a variety of religious activities, clubs and organizations that will help your student stay close to or grow in their faith while at SMC.

Here are three ways to take a closer look at SMC:

  2. Attend our Open House on October 21

I’m so glad you posted this. It’s only 3 1/2 hrs from me, and we too are trying to figure out God’s plans for our Junior’s future.
